Working visit PAS and AERIUS to Wallonia

Thursday, 16 October 2014

In Wallonia, as in the Netherlands, nitrogen is proving a hindrance to achieving Natura 2000 targets. On 10 October, representatives of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Limburg Province and the AERIUS team paid a working visit to the Wallonian Government. The meeting was one in a series of visits to neighbouring countries, with the aim of arriving at a transboundary assessment framework for nitrogen.

During this first meeting, parties mainly exchanged information about their respective nitrogen policies and calculation tool sets. Wallonia has no real nitrogen policy or structural assessment, but the Wallonian Government does have its own calculation tool to explore the nitrogen issue. Presentations on AERIUS and the Dutch Integrated Approach to Nitrogen (PAS) were received with enthusiasm. In a first step towards harmonisation, the Wallonian Government will be happy to exchange information about the location of the Wallonian Natura 2000 areas, habitat types and critical load levels, for the purpose of the Dutch assessment.

The Benelux, a collaboration between the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, will support the organisation of the next meeting between the parties.
