International workshop ‘N deposition and the Nature Directives’
AERIUS has contributed to the international workshop on ‘N deposition and the Nature Directives’, as part of a Dutch delegation from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR). The workshop was organised by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee of the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Around 50 international experts shared their knowledge and experience regarding the issue of nitrogen in European nature areas.
The workshop was held in Peterborough (UK) from 2 to 4 December this year. Various Member States made presentations, among other things about the nitrogen impact on nature, source-related policy and European reporting obligations. In various sessions the workshop participants drafted proposals for an integrated approach to nitrogen emissions and the impact of nitrogen deposition on nature, both on national and European levels.
Participants working with the Calculator
The AERIUS team held a plenary presentation about developments in the Netherlands. And of course participants were given the opportunity to work with AERIUS Calculator, the English version of which meanwhile also has become available. Around 20 nitrogen experts from Denmark, Germany, England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Flanders and Wales took up this opportunity and were very positive about the possibilities of AERIUS Calculator and Monitor. Furthermore, they also greatly appreciated the open-source approach. Therefore, one of the recommendations made by the group of experts was that an AERIUS system should be considered for the whole North Atlantic region.
